In Marvel Comics, Ms Marvel returns as muslim teen

Marvel Comics is bringing Ms Marvel back as a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants living in Jersey City named Kamala Khan.
Muslim Ms Marvel
The character, among the first to be a series protagonist who is both female and Muslim, is part of Marvel Entertainment’s efforts to reflect a growing diversity among its readers while keeping ahold of the contemporary relevance that have underlined its foundation since the creation of Spider-Man and the X-Men in the early 1960s.

Writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, working with editor Sana Amanat, say the series reflects Khan’s vibrant but kinetic world, learning to deal with superpowers, family expectations and adolescence.

Amanat calls the series a ”desire to explore the Muslim-American diaspora from an authentic perspective” and what it means to be young and lost amid expectations by others while also telling the story of a teenager coming to grips with having amazing powers.

”I wanted Ms Marvel to be true-to-life, something real people could relate to, particularly young women. High school was a very vivid time in my life, so I drew heavily on those experiences, impending adulthood, dealing with school, emotionally charged friendships that are such a huge part of being a teenager,” said Wilson, a convert to Islam whose previous comics work includes the graphic novel ”Cairo” and series ”Air” from Vertigo.

”It’s for all the geek girls out there and everybody else who’s ever looked at life from the fringe.” This Ms. Marvel can grow and shrink her limbs and her body and, Wilson said, ultimately, she’ll be able to shape shift into other forms.

The idea came after a discussion with senior editor Stephen Wacker as he and Amanat, a Muslim-American, compared stories about growing up.

From there it germinated into a ”character for all those little girls who are growing up now the way you are growing up,” she recalled. Wilson was brought on board to write the series and the team quickly got approval from Marvel’s creative committee to move forward.

DC Comics last fall relaunched its ”Green Lantern” series with Simon Baz, an Arab American and Muslim. The character reflects writer Geoff Johns’ Lebanese ancestry and his upbringing in the Detroit area.

There have been a few others: Marvel Comics has Dust, a young Afghan woman whose mutant ability to manipulate sand and dust has been part of the popular X-Men books. DC Comics in late 2010 introduced Nightrunner, a young Muslim hero of Algerian descent reared in Paris.

The creative team said that Khan’s backstory, growing up Muslim, is an element of the story, but not the critical foundation, either. ”Kamala is not unlike Peter Parker,” said Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso of the teenager turned wall crawler.

”She’s a 16-year-old girl from the suburbs who is trying to figure out who she is and trying to forge an identity when she suddenly bestows great power and learns the great responsibility that comes with it.”

Majority of expats in Kuwait struggle to save money

According to a recent report of the World Bank on the money transfers of migrants and expatriates, Kuwait ranked third in the Gulf with $8.5 billion sent abroad in 2012, while the expats in Saudi Arabia transferred $27.6 billion, and expats in United Arab Emirates remitted $20.3 billion. The United States ranked the first worldwide with migrant transfers of $123 billion.

The report also mentioned that remittance flows to developing countries are estimated to have totaled $401 billion in 2012, an increase of 5.3 percent over the previous year. Global remittance flows, including those to high-income countries, were an estimated $529 billion in 2012. The developing world is expected to receive $414 billion in migrant remittances in 2013, an increase of 6.3 percent over the previous year. Globally, the world’s 232 million inter- national migrants are expected to remit earnings worth $550 billion this year.

Samer, a 55-year-old sends about 60-70 per- cent of his salary to Jordan every month. “I’m transferring money to my children who live there with their mother. I transfer the money on a monthly basis for their expenses only, and I’m not saving any money,” he told the Kuwait Times. The majority of the Asian community are transferring money back home, and lean more towards savings and investment.

Paul, a 52- year-old is living in Kuwait with his wife only and the rest of his family and children are living in India. “I transfer about 20-30 percent of my salary to my family abroad, but a part of it goes into savings. When we finally leave Kuwait and head home, we should have some savings to depend on. I know many Arab expats don’t save any money and spend all their salary,” he pointed out.

Victor from Nigeria transfers about 50 per- cent of his salary to his family living in two countries. “About 45 percent of my salary goes into paying the house rent. I transfer about half of my salary to both UK and Nigeria, and I live off only 5 percent. I’m not saving as my income is not enough to save. My existence is one of hand to mouth. Over the past five years, my situation has been the same which was caused by the financial crisis, when all the fees were hiked. Even transferring money is expensive now because it was $7 for $100 earlier and now it’s $14 for the same amount. Before 2008, I used to save about 40 percent of my salary, which is now impossible,” he explained.

Ibtisam, a 37-year-old Syrian expat multiplied her money transfers after the bad situation in Syria since the last two years. “Two years ago, I was transferring about 5 percent of my salary and sending it to mom for her to use as pocket money. I used to spend all my salary on myself and wasn’t saving anything. Now after the bad situation in Syria, I’m sending my family about 80 percent of my salary to Egypt as they moved there after the war started in Syria. I hope this will change once the situation gets better,” she said.

Yahya, a 30-year-old from Egypt is transfer- ring about 25 percent of his salary every month to his family back home. “I’m living with my wife and children, and the rest of family lives in Egypt and I send them money for their needs, so I haven’t been able to save much. Sometimes, I send more money if they have an emergency and need money. In general, I can’t send more money as I haven’t got a raise in my salary over the past few years,” he stated

Once a ‘wife’ soon to be a husband

522964767c76f
Some eight months ago, happily married Nagina Akram had not even imagined one day she would be running a tyre shop at a bus stand as a young man, Usman Akram.

Usman was born as a girl to a family living in Ghaziabad. His father Haji Akram was a trader. As Nagina, (s)he was married to an expatriate Khalid who worked in Spain in 2011.

Khalid and Nagina spent two years as a happily married couple. Khalid would visit Pakistan after about every six moths to see his wife.

When the couple had no ‘good news’ even after two years of their marriage, Khalid asked his wife to consult a doctor.

That casual visit to a local gynecologist Dr Tahira Khalid changed every thing for the couple, especially the wife.

The gynecologist, after observing some changes occurring in Nagina’s body advised her to have some necessary tests at Karachi’s Agha Khan Hospital.

The tests confirmed that Nagina was undergoing sex change and needed surgery that was conducted at a local private hospital, turning her into a young man who was named Usman Akram.

At that time Khalid was in Spain, busy pursuing the legal procedures necessary to bring his ‘wife’ to the European country.

Usman told Dawn that initially he felt very shy about the change he had gone through. “For at least eight months I shaved my face to grow facial hair so that I looked like a man,” he said, adding that finally he succeeded in his effort.

He said that soon after his medical tests confirmed signs of sex change he had informed his husband about this telephonically and since then they had not contacted each other. Khalid’s family had amicably returned the dowry, he added.

He said that since he needed some means to earn his livelihood as a man, he started running a tyre shop on the bus stand.

Usman, who has been issued his new CNIC with male status, is looking for a suitable girl so that he could start his new marital life, now as husband.

Oceans

This is the Gulf of Alaska ocean meeting the Pacific Ocean. Two oceans which do not mix. To give my next point more solidity, let’s not ask when this was discovered by explorers, let’s ask when was Alaska even discovered??

“Outsiders first discovered Alaska in 1741 when Danish explorer Vitus Jonassen Bering sighted it on a voyage from Siberia.”

That is approximately 270 years ago. However, did you know that almost 1400 yeas ago! Allah revealed to Prophet Muhamad -a man who grew up in Mecca/desert- verses about this phenomenon.

“And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.” 25:53.

“He released the two seas, meeting [side by side]. Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.” 55-56:19.

This is one of the countless miracles of the Quran. If it’s not enough for you, then search the other hundreds that scholars have extracted until today.

Thank you Allah for this breathtaking Book.

Kuwait polls: Shiites lose as Islamists, tribes, liberals gain seats

KUWAIT - CELEBRATIONS - ELECTIONS
Shiites emerged the main losers in the National Assembly elections yesterday as they won only eight seats down from as many as 17 in the scrapped Assembly elected last December. The Shiites won five seats in the First Constituency which is their main stronghold and one seat each in the Second, Third and Fifth constituencies. Liberal also won several seats with Marzouk Al-Ghanem, Rakan Al-Nasef and Faisal Al-Shaye scoring good wins. Sunni Islamists also improved on their strength winning around 10 seats compared to around five in the scrapped Assembly. Official Salafists maintained their strength of two seats.

Opposition members who were with the opposition and boycotted last December polls but took part in this election like Abdullah Al-Turaiji and Riyadh Al-Adasani won seats but veteran former MP Abdullah Al-Roumi lost. With a small part of the votes not counted yet, turnover was around 60 percent, 20 percent higher than the previous election in December.

The high turnover came despite calls by opposition for boycott, the scorching heat and fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. The main increase in voting came from tribal areas as tribesmen thronged onto polling stations to ensure the success of their tribesí candidates.

The Kuwaiti criminal court sentenced on Sunday four suspects to death for killing a Lebanese doctor with a cleaver in December last year.

Samir Yousef Jaber, 26, a Lebanese dentist born of a Kuwaiti mother, was repeatedly stabbed with the cleaver following a disagreement with the four young men at Avenues Mall.

Reports have said that the stabbing occurred when the men followed Jaber into the mall after engaging in a dispute with him over a parking space.

The victim was taken to hospital after the attack, but he succumbed to his wounds.

10 Ways Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Is Better Than The iPhone 5

ip5s4
Samsung announced its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S 4 earlier this month in New York.

Critics have been going wild because the Galaxy S 4 is real competition to Apple’s iPhone 5.
The Galaxy S 4 is packed with the latest hardware and software features like a 13 megapixel camera, eye tracking technology, and even a way to use the phone without touching the screen.
While the iPhone 5 is still an impressive smartphone, it doesn’t hold a candle to the Galaxy S 4.

The Galaxy S 4 is faster than the iPhone 5.Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 has a quad-core processor compared the the iPhone 5’s dual core processor.

Primate Labs ran a benchmark test pitting the Galaxy S 4 against other top tier smartphones including the iPhone 5.

The results show that the Galaxy S 4 is almost two times faster than the iPhone 5.

The Galaxy S 4’s screen is bigger.The Galaxy S 4’s screen measures a whopping 5-inches.

That’s a full inch more screen real estate than the Phone 5. A bigger screen means more apps on one page, more space for videos, and higher quality.

The Galaxy S 4 has better camera software.Software aside, the Galaxy S 4 packs a whopping 13 megapixel camera, compared to the iPhone 5’s eight megapixel camera.

The Galaxy S 4’s camera has a bunch of software features that will make any amateur look like a professional. It’s easier to take pictures and edit them on the go.

Pictures stand out with features like, photo blur, which allows you to erase people or things from a photo and Share Shot, which lets you sync your friends’ Galaxy S phones together to share photos.

The Galaxy S 4 is more versatile. The Galaxy S 4 has the latest version of Android, which by nature is a more customizable operating system than Apple’s iOS.

But besides making phone calls and downloading apps, the Galaxy S 4 can be used as a remote for your compatible Samsung TV.

Forbes Haydn Shaughnessy of Forbes points out, “on the S4 microsite Samsung says the phone ‘suggests different programs based on your preferences, provides program schedules, and does the channel surfing for you. The Samsung GALAXY S4 even allows you to remotely control the TV or setup boxes.'”

The Galaxy S 4 has a sharper screen. The iPhone 5’s Retina Display pushes out an astounding 1136×640-pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch.
But, Samsung used an HD Super AMOLED screen and beefed up the resolution on the Galaxy S 4 to a impressive 1920×1080 at 441 pixels per inch.

Google Now is light-years better than Siri. This is an Android feature but is still counts as a reason the Galaxy S 4 is better that the iPhone 5.

Google Now is a personal assistant that comes included with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It uses all the information available in your smartphone to provide you with relevant information. For example, your phone knows the route you take home and if there is traffic it will prompt you to go a faster way.

If you’re about to take a flight, Google Now prompts you to check in and even gives you weather in the destination city.

Siri just can’t compete.

The Galaxy S 4 has more memory contributing to the overall quickness of the phone. The Galaxy S 4 is packed with 2 GB of RAM. That means you can run more apps at once, have more tabs open in your browser, and it just contributes to the overall quickness of the smartphone.

The iPhone 5 runs on half of that, only using 1 GB.

The Galaxy S 4 has a removable battery!A removable battery means that when your phone is running low you don’t have to stay tethered to a plug. Samsung even sells an extra battery kit allowing you to get some extra juice in a hurry.

Users can expand the Galaxy S 4’s storage. If you don’t want to shell out the extra money for a 64 GB Galaxy S 4, you can expand the smaller sizes (16GB and 32GB) with a MicroSD card. You can also save data to the MicroSD instead of your actual phone’s memory.
