‘Spiderman’ climbs Dubai’s Burj Khalifa

A French daredevil urban climber on Monday scaled the world’s tallest building, the 828-meter (2,717-foot) Burj Khalifa in Dubai, fighting winds that delayed his ascent for hours.

Alain Robert, 48, who is also known as the French Spiderman, took about six hours to climb the more than 160-storey building, using a rope and harness as required by organizers.

But he said the safety precautions and the attention from a crowd that had gathered to watch made him more nervous.

“Actually there is huge pressure on me because I know that they have installed everything there; this is for me. There is a giant screen, 50 meters high, 30 meters long. I know everybody is going to look at me so it’s a bit of — a lot of — stress in fact,” Robert said before the climb.

Robert has been arrested many times in various countries as authorities rarely give permission for his dangerous climbs.

Robert first climbed a building at the age of 12 when he got locked out of his apartment and decided to mount the eight stories up to an open window.

He has since climbed more than 80 buildings around the world including Chicago’s Sears Tower and Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

iPhone games: Tiny Wings knocks down Angry Birds

Tiny wings  knocked off Angry Birds from the number one position on the App store. In almost all stores worldwide, it is currently topping the charts in top paid apps category and has also got featured by Apple. My prediction of it being the first hit title of 2011 is coming true. The gameplay is quite simple; not much of physics, but still very addictive. It is the graphics and excellent fps [frames per second], which keeps the game going.

MoH reveals new diabetes drug

The Ministry of Health unveiled a new drug that will help diabetic patients, and it is used for the first time in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The new drug helps patients control their diseases better, particularly those of the type-2, who suffer from obesity.

Head of the Internal Diseases Department at Mubarak Al-Kabir Hospital Dr. Nabila Abdullah warned – before a host of doctors from the Ministry of Health and private sector at a medical symposium – of the soaring number of type-2 diabetics by 20 percent, bringing them obesity, which is one of the main health problems in the country. She added that though there is a widespread notion that diabetes affects the blood sugar metabolism, it is also much higher related to heart diseases and strokes more than smoking and high cholesterol rates.

Meanwhile, head of the diabetes unit at the Amiri hospital Dr. Abdulnabi Al-Attar said that high rates of diabetes affliction in Kuwait is well-known, which is considered, along with other GCC states, among the top-10 most afflicted countries worldwide. Further, he said that the scientific development that helps discover new remedies to chronic diseases, foremost among them is diabetes, gives hope to patients, making clear that this new drug was used before in US and Europe with no side effects in relation to overweight. As for Dr. David Stern, one of the world-renowned diabetes specialists, he said that one of the functions of the new drug is that it works as a catalyst for using the stored-up body energy.

He added that the drug works through a method which increases the level of a hormone that distributes food substances within the body, while reducing the level of another hormone that catalyzes body to reduce more sugar instead of burning its sugar stockpile. Niqab/burqa driving penalties fall sharply

The number of citations issued against female motorists for wearing niqabs or burqas whilst driving has fallen sharply in kuwait, reported local daily. Report came as per the latest figures from the Central Statistics Department (CSD).

The CSD figures show that, whilst 2,351 citations were issued to female motorists in 2005 for wearing the items, which are believed to restrict a driver’s peripheral vision and thus increase the chance of accidents, this number had fallen to only 19 for the whole of 2009, reported Al-Watan daily.

Local road safety experts have questioned whether the drastic reduction in these citations should be attributed to niqab or burqa-wearing female motorists becoming more safety conscious or to a decision by traffic police to turn a blind eye to this violation.

Hitler’s wife

Adolf Hitler is one of the darkest figures of the 20th century. But less is known about his girlfriend, Eva Braun, who he kept secret from Nazi Germany for years.

Pictures of the girlfriend and then wife have recently surfaced through Life Magazine, brought to light through collector and curator Reinhard Schulz.

The cache of photos from the young model’s personal album was confiscated in 1945 by the American army. So who was the woman by Hitler’s side? Young Eva first met Hitler in 1929 when he was a rising star in the Nazi party. He was introduced to the 17-year-old as Herr Wolff, while she modeled for the official Nazi photographer Heinrich Hoffmann in Munich.

The Bavarian became Hitler’s companion, despite being kept hidden from the public and often left alone. A depressive, she attempted suicide twice, but still remained loyal to Hitler to the end.

After learning about the failed plot to kill Hitler, Braun wrote him, “From our first meeting I swore to follow you anywhere even unto death. I live only for your love.”

In the last days of the war, just before they ended their lives, she became his wife. Braun committed suicide with Hitler at the age of 33.

Maybe not surprisingly, the photos of Hitler’s longtime companion do not cast her in the most positive light.

Iran tops negative influence poll

Iran is the country seen as having the most negative influence in the world, according to an annual survey by BBC World Service published on Monday.

The Islamic Republic was followed by North Korea and Pakistan in the survey of negative and positive views of people in 27 countries based on events in 2010.

Iran saw its negative rating rise three points to 59 percent since the previous study, which was based on events in 2009.

Unfavourable ratings for Iran showed a marked year-on-year increase in Britain, Canada, the United States, Australia and the Philippines.

Germany was the most positively viewed nation, but Brazil was the big winner as its status as an emerging power was confirmed with a positive rating which rose from 40 percent to 49 percent, leaving it ranked seventh in the positive stakes.

In the year when it hosted the football World Cup, the proportion who rated South Africa positively rose to 42 percent from 35 percent last time.

Israel was ranked as the fourth most unpopular country.

The pollsters said that while views of Israel overall have not changed substantially over the past year, there had been “significant increases” in negative views of the country among Americans and Britons.

A total of 28,619 people were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone in December last year and on February 4 this year, meaning the survey was done before the overthrow of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

What frustrates Arab women most?

Being overlooked for job promotion is the biggest frustration for women in the Arab world while housework and the pressure to look pretty figure among their top five peeves, a Yahoo! survey showed.

One-fourth of 915 respondents in the regional survey considered the denial of job promotion as most frustrating, followed by 17% of those who find house chores as the biggest annoyance.

“Women in the Arab world are increasingly filling jobs, so it is interesting to read that some of their biggest frustrations are related to work, such as the denied opportunity for promotion in the workplace and inequality in pay,” said Tamara Deprez, head of Yahoo! in Dubai.

“This should help in correcting some Western misconceptions about women in the Arab world and their role as workers.”

The social expectation to look good at all times was found to be most annoying by 8% of respondents, closely followed by the frustrations about inequality in pay and the husband’s behaviour.

Arab women think 25 years is the ideal age to get married, according to the survey, which also found that longer the marriage, the more frustrating it gets. More women above the age of 46 said they were unhappy with their husbands.

Interestingly, a quarter of women in Qatar ranked the husband as their biggest peeve rather than not receiving a job promotion.

Top peeves of Arab women

1.    Denial of promotion (25%)

2.    Household work (17%)

3.    Looking good at all times (8%)

4.    Inequality in pay (7%)

5.    My husband (7%)

6.    Having parents-in-law in the house (6%)

7.    Providing care to older family members (3%)

8.    Children (2%)

Top Arab women role models

Jordan’s Queen Rania and the Qatari emir’s wife Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al-Missned are the most popular role models for Arab women, according to a survey by Yahoo!.

The Jordanian queen enjoyed far more popularity among women, receiving 27% of their vote compared with 17% from men.

Rania, a commoner from a Palestinian family, married Jordan’s prince Abdullah in 1993.

She is known for her distinguishable taste in fashion, and has established herself as a campaigner for universal education.

A mother of two boys and two girls, Queen Rania says on her website: “I just wake up and feel like a regular person. At the end of the day you are living your life for the people that you represent.”

The Qatari first lady has been engaged in education and social reforms, along with several development projects. Sheikha Mozah chairs the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, a private non-profit initiative to promote the small gas-rich country.

Unlike the wives of other Gulf Arab monarchs, she is a visible public figure. She was in the limelight late last year, appearing with her husband Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani when Qatar won the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The findings of the Yahoo! survey were released prior to the International Women’s Day on March 8.

Thirty-six percent of those polled did not pick their role model from the choices that included Egyptian writer and activist Nawal El Saadawi, Tunisian actress Hend Sabry, Egyptian film director Inas Degheedy, Egyptian filmmaker Ateyyat Abnoudy and journalist Octavia Nasr.
